Potassium carbonate CAS No.: 584-08-7, with the chemical formula K2CO3, has a molecular weight of 138.21. At room temperature, it is a white crystalline powder or particle, odorless, hygroscopic, soluble in water (solubility 111g/100mL at 25℃), insoluble in alcohols, with a density of approximately 2.428g/cm3, and a melting point of 891℃.
Potassium carbonate can be used in the production of optical glass, welding rods, for the production of reducing dyes and their printing and bleaching in dyeing and ice dyeing, and can be mixed with soda ash to be used as a dry powder fire extinguishing agent. The aqueous solution can be used for the boiling of cotton fabric and the degreasing of wool. In addition, it is also used in ink, photographic chemicals, polyesters, explosives, electroplating, leather making, ceramics, building materials, crystals, potassium soaps, and the production of medicines.
